Galleries & Museums

Norwich is blessed with some of the best museums and art galleries in the county and possibly the UK. Award-winning buildings and iconic structures house priceless collections, sharing stories about historical events, people, art, archaeology, textiles and literature. See treasures of Roman gold unearthed in Norfolk, outstanding displays of natural history and works of art by Giacometti, Picasso, Degas, Henry Moore, Francis Bacon and the Norwich School of Painters. In addition to Norwich Castle’s vast exhibits they also boast six private collections housed at The Shirehall offering over a million items to view 1:1 with a curator (by appointment 01603 493625)..

Many venues run superb workshops, talks and school holiday programmes to further delight their audiences, bringing history and tales to life and creating memorable experiences for all. Some venues such as The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Marble Hall, East Gallery NUA, St Andrews Hall and Country & Eastern are free to enter.

Marble Hall whilst not strictly a museum or a gallery is an absolute week day must visit. This hidden gem is adorned by 15 varieties of marble, classically inspired frescos and a stunning glass atrium. It also contains an 'air fountain' and a chiming skeleton clock made for the Great Exhibition of 1851.

One of Norwich’s best kept secrets is the collections of Norfolk Museums Service. Combined they offer over a million items to view on a 1:1 basis with a curator (booking ahead is essential, 01603 493625). See collections for; Archaeology, Costume and Textile, Decorative Art, Fine Art, Natural History and Royal Norfolk Regimental Collection.
