Known locally as ‘the village within the city’, Norwich’s magnificent Cathedral grounds are open to visitors of all faiths and none. Set in 44 beautiful acres with access to a riverside walk, it’s awe-inspiring, and hard to believe you’re in the centre of a busy, thriving city.
The Cathedral’s spectacular architecture, magnificent art, and a rich history means there is plenty to uncover. This is one of the finest complete Romanesque cathedrals in all of Europe, with the second-tallest spire and largest monastic cloisters in England. And the Cathedral houses more than a thousand beautiful medieval roof boss sculptures, and a plethora of art. Take the time to explore it all.
But the Cathedral also has its secrets. Join a free tour, held Monday-Saturday every hour from 10am – 3pm and gain a wonderful insight into this 900-year-old building. Or, join a low-cost specialist tour and dig deeper into the lesser known parts of this spectacular site.
Look out for medieval graffiti, which was uncovered in 2013 during a Norfolk Medieval Graffiti Survey, visit Edith Cavell’s grave, join their pop-up exhibitions and special events, or watch the Cathedral’s falcons live on camera in fascination. The Cathedral have also teamed up with artisan bakers Bread Source to transform their Refectory into something special. Open from 8am – 6pm Monday – Saturday and 8am – 4pm on Sundays, The Refectory sits under the shadow of the Cathedral’s spire, making it the perfect place for tea and cake, a light snack, or a delicious lunch.
There is no entry fee to the Cathedral – it’s completely free to explore – but donations are gratefully received to support this Norwich icon.
