Postcard from the past

When Michael Parravani entered an antique shop in Devon he had no idea that he would stumble upon a captured memory of his family business. In the 1890’s before he set up his own ice cream business, Parravani’s Ice Cream, Giuseppe Parravani worked with his older brother Domenico on Domenico’s ice cream cart in Norwich. The postcard found by Michael was written in 1908, and was sent to friends of the family in Ipswich. On the front is a picture of Giuseppe taken in Ber Street, with his ice cream cart and pony.
The Parravani’s ice cream business has now spanned over a century, making it by far the oldest business of its kind in Norfolk, and the coincidence of this find has amazed the Parravani family, who still own and run the business to this day. The ice cream is now made in Chedgrave with
full cream milk and butter, based on the family recipe handed down from Giuseppe.

Dominic Parravani comments, “We were amazed when my father came home with the photograph; it is the only picture we have of my great great uncle, and it just reminded us that the Parravanis were making ice cream in Norwich in the 1890’s. Sometimes we forget to shout about how long established we are; we have been supplying traditional home made ice cream for over 110 years”

The Ice cream can now be found being served throughout the summer outside the Forum in the heart of Norwich!
