Heritage & Attractions in Norwich and the countryside 2011

St Peter Mancroft
Thanks to its medieval origins as Britain’s second city, Norwich has an historic fabric that stands comparison with the finest heritage cities in the UK. Over 1,500 historic buildings lie within the city walls and the city’s compact sale means you can easily explore on foot. As well as two magnificent cathedrals and an imposing Norman castle, you’ll find more medieval churches than any other city north of the Alps within pretty medieval streets like the wonderfully preserved Elm Hill with its cobbles and half-timbered houses.

Museums & Galleries

Norwich is a medieval city with all the history you would associate with such a location. The twin monuments of the Norman castle and cathedral are reminders of the rich heritage that Norwich embodies today. The city still has over 30 flint-built medieval churches. Virtually every street tells a historical story, and you’ll find many fine examples of museums and galleries reflecting this.

Family Fun

The festive season brings a Christmas past to life! See an authentic Victorian Christmas at Stranger’s Hall, enjoy a great day out at the Family Christmas Carousel at Dragon Hall, or see the fabulous Thursford Christmas Spectacular - the biggest and most exciting Christmas show of all time in Britain! More fun is to be had at Gressenhall and Norwich Puppet Theatre and don’t forget the steam railways of the Bure Valley - steam trains to Santa and Bressingham a delight especially at Christmas.

Gardens, Walking and Shopping

There are many gardens and walks in Norwich and the countryside to enjoy as autumn turns into winter. A brisk stroll to blow away the cobwebs or to take time out from the busy season is just lovely on a cold sunny day.
