Heritage Open Days
11th - 14th September 2008

Heritage Open Days is the biggest free cultural event in the country and for the last three years Norwich has broken records with its programme.

Organised by Norwich HEART the building openings and special events have consistently been the largest number in England - and this year we hope to beat our record!. This year you can choose from around 200 fantastic free events - our biggest number yet!

New additions include:
evening events
the undercrofts at Augustine Steward House
the Discover Norwich Tour road train
an Elizabethan church service in St Andrews Hall
pubs new to Heritage Open Days, with historical exhibitions.

Download the Heritage Open Days brochure as a PDF or pick it up in the EDP and Evening News. It will also be available online at www.heritagecity.org and from city centre venues including the Tourist Information Centre (TIC). Postal booking begins on 4th August, and in person at the TIC at the Assembly House from 26th August.

Pre-Booked Events:

Old favourites will be available again, and for some you will need to book early to avoid disappointment. Tours such as the Great Hospital, Bowhill and Elliott’s and the City Hall clock tower always fill up quickly because numbers have to be limited for safety reasons. Some venues, especially the private homes, are just very small - for example the regency Gothic House, or the upper rooms at the Britons Arms can only accommodate a few people at a time. If you are disappointed for some events though, there is still plenty to do.

Some of the events take you a bit further into the history of Norwich - literally or metaphorically! You can get underground in person, by visiting beautiful vaulted Medieval undercrofts, scary dungeons and cramped atmospheric Victorian cellars!

Maddermarket Theatre
Drop-in Events:

All 32 Medieval parish churches are opening their doors for at least one day, even those not currently in use. Have a look around the Maddermarket Theatre or watch some short performances of historic dances - you can even join in! If that all sounds like a bit too much, take a city sightseeing tour by bus.
