Description
Join us as we open after dark for a celebration of Valentine’s Eve! Valentine’s Eve was a tradition in Victorian Norwich. Two weeks before the 13th February, shops in Norwich would be decorated in huge anticipation of Valentine’s Eve. It was as big as Christmas with frenzied shopping for wonderful Valentine’s gifts to bestow anonymously on their loved ones. Extra staff would be taken on to cope with demand and newspapers would be full of interesting advertisements.

Discover the full story, view stunning handmade Valentine’s cards and see love tokens from the Norwich Castle collections. Children will be able to make their own versions of Valentine’s cards PLUS the museum will also be sharing stories of the legend of Jack Valentine.

Jack Valentine is another Norfolk tradition. Devious Jack would trick and tease people of all ages with his offerings of anonymous amorous gifts. Jack would knock at the door and families would rush to open them in anticipation of catching him – but they never did! Often Jack would play tricks by attaching string to gifts then pull them away when the eager recipient made a grab for them! Learn all about Jack and his naughty ways from a Victorian costumed storyteller and in true Jack Valentine style all children will receive a small gift from a shadowy Jack leaving presents at a door in the museum.

Some families in Norfolk still to this day have a visit from Jack Valentine. Come and help us reignite interest in these wonderful local traditions and have some fun too.

On the night there will be a complimentary drink for each visitor and the chance to join in a Love Quiz with the chance to win a prize! This great evening, suitable and interesting for all ages, is an excellent opportunity to explore the museum at night and to talk to curators and staff.
