St Mary’s, Tivetshall St Mary
Remote but beautiful, the ruin is entirely accessible without having been tamed very much. Wander through the old south porch and marvel at what is left of this 14th century church. The ivy has become king here but the birdsong and the countryside will inspire your romantic plans. You and your sweetheart can climb up on to the mound at the west end, all that is left of the plain 14th century tower.
In February there will be very few leaves on the trees but you may see the odd snowdrop – the promise of the beginning of spring and the start of new life.
Norwich Cathedral Grounds
Outside the Cathedral are the largest monastic cloisters of any English Cathedral. Atmospheric and deeply spiritual they evoke times gone by and an age of chivalry and unrequited love. In the middle of the green is a stone Labyrinth, signifying a spiritual journey and there is only one path that leads through all the twists and turns.
Norwich Cathedral Close is one of the largest in England and is a very tranquil place. Walk through here with your loved one and experience the history and beauty of the area.
Riverside Walk Norwich
From the Cathedral you can walk along the river. Ideal for a dreamy wander with your darling you can feed the ducks and watch the water go by. There are a few landmarks along the way if you can take your eyes off your beloved for long enough!
Pulls Ferry in Norwich is a 15th century arch, named after a ferryman who worked here. A canal from the river was dug from here to the cathedral, to allow stone to be ferried as close to the construction site as possible. The inlet remained until the late 1700s.
Further along the riverside path is a medieval brick defensive lookout called Cow Tower. It was built at the end of the 12th Century at a strategic bend in the River Wensum as part of the city defences. It was later used as a shelter for cows.
The Norfolk Broads
If you really want to get away from it all why not
hire a boat. This way you and your honey can be ensconced together on the Broads – only meeting with others when you choose.
From Norwich it’s a short trip along the River or road to Ranworth. Here you will find the "Cathedral of the Broads" - a lovely old church with steps allowing you to climb the church tower for fantastic views over the Broads. It will be very bracing in February and so an ideal place to cuddle up to your adored one whilst you look out across the countryside. And when you are suitably chilled you can wander into a pub and warm yourself and your love, hopefully in front of a blazing fire.
Just down the river or road is Salhouse, a long Broadland village stretched out along the road from Wroxham. The main village is not actually adjacent to Salhouse Broad, but a half-mile path links the village to Salhouse Broad. Salhouse Broad is a lovely place to moor and take a walk on the nearby grassy bank, it is also the only Broad to have a "sandy" beach.
Blickling Hall Aylsham
Built in the early 17th century, Blickling Hall is one of England's great Jacobean houses. The house unfortunately isn’t open in February but your attention would be distracted by the beauty of your beloved anyway, so far better to take a walk in the 22-hectare (55-acre) garden. You can discover the secret garden together and maybe discuss some secrets of your own. The Hall is set in an historic park with many beautiful woodland and lakeside walks.
Wymondham Abbey
Wymondham Abbey is one of the finest and most interesting of the historic churches of East Anglia. Its two tall towers dominate the countryside for miles around. What better place to take your treasured one than somewhere as precious as they are to you. Inside it is distinguished by its twelfth-century nave arcades, its magnificent fifteenth-century angel roofs and its remarkable altar-screen, designed in the twentieth century by Sir Ninian Comper.
Brief Encounter at the Wymondham train station
Take the train to Wymondham and you can experience something little seen in England – a railway restaurant. Playing homage to the 1946 film Brief Encounter, where two strangers fall in love over tea and cake perhaps something in the atmosphere will rub off on you and if you are unattached it could be the start of something special!
Plantation Garden
What a location for romance and possibly great for a marriage proposal! This is Norwich's secret garden and once you have visited you will understand why.
This Victorian garden lovingly resorted by a group of enthusiastic volunteers is the perfect place for a hand in hand walk and costs only £2 to get in. Located on Earlham Road just behind the Roman Catholic Cathedral your love will be blown away by your romantic gesture of a visit to this amazing secret place.
