Christmas is certainly not cancelled in Norwich & Norfolk this year! There’s still plenty of amazing, socially-distanced festive events to enjoy across the county. Everything from Christmas markets and fayres, to light shows, pantomime, and where to see old Saint Nick! Here’s our rundown of 13 fantastic Christmas events going ahead in Norwich & Norfolk this year.
The Tunnel of Light
Back for its fifth year in the city centre, the Tunnel of Light has become one of the most anticipated Christmas attractions in the UK. Owned by Norwich BID, the tunnel is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, with visitors travelling from far and wide to enjoy it over the Christmas holidays. Consisting of more than 57,000 LED bulbs and 5.6 miles of cabling, this 45-metre spectacle will be in Norwich until the new year, with new social distancing measures in place to ensure visitor safety.
Norwich Castle projections
Another festive favourite amongst visitors and locals is the incredible Christmas projections onto Norwich Castle. Over the years, guests have been amazed by the shows projected onto the iconic façade of Norwich Castle – everything from Fantasia to Father Christmas! This year, the Norwich BID team will be treating you to a brand-new projection show that is set to spread festive cheer throughout Norwich.
A Right Royal Christmas at Norwich Theatre Royal
Norwich Theatre Royal is back with a bang this Christmas, offering up three brand new festive live shows! Visitors can enjoy socially-distanced, family fun at ‘Panto in a Pickle!’, a panto mash-up that puts the likes of Cinderella, Snow White, Captain Hook and Aladdin on the same stage! Or why not swing in for ‘A Circus Carol’, an intricate re-imagining of Charles Dickens’ timeless classic from renowned local theatre company, Lost in Translation. And if you’re looking for something more grown up, you’ll love ‘She Go Does it Under the Christmas Tree .. with Friends’, a special Christmas show from comedy performer, Karl Minns.
Thursford’s Enchanted Journey of Light
New for 2020, come and enjoy this unique, immersive light experience. Explore over 4 acres of breath-taking light artwork and sculptures that create a stunning winter wonderland for visitors of all ages. Everything from polar bears and penguins, to giant-sized teddy bears, elves and more!
The Norfolk Christmas Fayre
The creators of the Royal Norfolk Fayre are bringing a fantastic festive experience to Norfolk this year, with the Christmas Fayre at Norfolk Showground. Celebrate the festive season and support amazing Norfolk businesses at this outdoor Christmas market. Running on the 4th and 5th of December, visitors can enjoy delicious street food, crafts, and local produce.
Christmas Market at Pensthorpe Natural Park
On Sunday 6th December, the popular Christmas Market returns to Pensthorpe Natural Park for its 4th year. Enjoy crafts, delicious festive food and drink, and great local produce from across Norfolk. The perfect place to finish off your Christmas shopping.
Bure Valley Railway’s Festive Express
A day out on Norfolk’s longest Narrow Gauge Steam Railway is great at any time of year, but their Festive Express really is something special. Enjoy festive treats, a steam train ride, and even a guest appearance from Santa himself! And from 27 December to 3 January, you can also enjoy the Mince Pie Special, a train ride through the wintery Norfolk countryside and mince pies – the perfect family-fun Christmas experience. Tickets are limited due to new social distancing measures, so book now to secure yours.
My First Panto: Goldilocks & The Three Bears at The Garage
My First Panto returns to The Garage this year with a brand new show. This telling of Goldilocks & The Three Bears is the perfect introduction to theatre for the little ones and is aimed at ages 7 and below. Enjoy socially-distanced singing, dancing, and all out laughter!
Festive Wreath Making at Maids Head Hotel
For anyone looking to step up their Christmas crafting skills this year, wreath making at the Maids Head is a must! For just £40 per person, guests will be treated to a delicious afternoon tea, a glass of prosecco, and a wreath making masterclass with Hannah Jarvis from Fern Flowers. Create your own unique wreath arrangement that’s perfect for hanging on your front door or gifting to a loved one.
Christmas Celebrations at Roarr!
Enjoy a Jurassic winter wonderland at Roarr! Dinosaur Adventure this Christmas. Expect Christmas songs, carol singing, festive decorations and plenty of dino fun. There will even be a surprise visit from Father Christmas!
Christmas at Africa Alive!
A fantastic festive experience for all ages. This year, head to Africa Alive! with your friends and family for Christmas crafts, animal handling in the Discovery Centre, and the chance to meet Father Christmas. Tickets need to be booked in advance here.
Festive Wreath Making at Fairhaven
Running throughout November and December, visitors to Fairhaven Woodland & Water Garden can enjoy socially-distanced crafts at one of their wreath making workshops. For just £30 per person (£25 for Fairhaven members), this 2-hour session will teach you how to create a fabulous Christmas wreath to hang on your door, using fresh foliage and natural materials from Fairhaven’s woodland garden.
The Santa Experience at Wroxham Barns
This unique Christmas experience was a huge hit last year and is back for 2020 with new socially-distanced measures. Taking place every weekend in December plus 21st, 22nd, 23rd and even Christmas Eve, guests can enjoy craft workshops, festive story-telling, an animal nativity, and fun with Santa and his elves.
