Rebecca Foster-Clarke (b. 1999) is a contemporary figurative artist based in Norwich, UK. She explores the disconcerting nature of being a young woman, weaving a tragicomic narrative where tongue-in-cheek humour meets an eerie uncanniness. Her work is characterised by vibrant colours and near-feverish realism, evoking a palpable tension reminiscent of the opening scenes in horror films.
‘Disturbia’ draws inspiration from vintage horror movies, exploring the duality of female archetypes: the innocent lamb and the monstrous villain. Women today often navigate a world as unpredictable and menacing as any horror film, where the mundane can suddenly turn sinister. The dark humor embedded in these works serves as a coping mechanism, a way to confront the absurdity and intensity of these experiences. It reflects the societal pressure to remain composed even when facing immense stress, highlighting the paradox of smiling through the fear. Through this work, the silent, everyday struggle of women is captured; an existence that can feel as unnerving and unpredictable as a well-crafted horror story.
