Food For Thought

One of our favourite things about Norwich is the standard of the food here! So we’ll keep this quick and short. Here are some of our recommendations for food in the city.

Cafés, Coffee Houses and Casual Dining

  1. Louis’ Deli
A serene little café on a quirky street full of independent shops; they have several hot and cold options for breakfast and lunch, either to eat in or take-away, or sit with a proper coffee and pastry while looking out onto St Giles. They also hold informal language lessons Monday to Friday where you can dip in and out of conversation – or be a fly on the wall and just take in the lovely accents of people going in and out of English, Italian, Spanish, French or German!

  2. The Britons Arms
A beautiful 14th century merchants house – now a little coffee house - in Elm Hill, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Serving homemade light lunches (Cromer crab quiche, patés and sandwiches) and some sweet treats to die for! Head to their sunny country courtyard garden if you love to be outdoors.

  3. Namaste India
Who says a good meal needs to have meat? This wonderful vegetarian Indian restaurant is situated on Opie Street in the Norwich Lanes and provides all the delights for everyone who loves Indian food. Served in traditional South Asians platters, a great option for those who want to try cuisine whose foundations are made on the prospect of sharing the love for food!

  4. The Grosvenor Fish Bar
A Norwich institution with quirky food like Bass with Sass, Five Quid Squid and Shark Bites. Downstairs the undercrofts have been exposed giving a cave like enjoyable experience whilst swing music plays melodically in the background.

Wine Bars, Restaurants and Fine Dining

  1. Cosmo
The perfect place for the ultimate foodie! An East-meets-West all you can eat buffet, with options from East Asia, South Asia, Europe and the Americas. Go from continent to continent as much as you can and then finish it all off with some delicious dessert. There is a chocolate fountain in the evenings by the way. You’re welcome

  2. Cote Brasserie
A quaint French-inspired brasserie serving breakfast, lunch and dinner – special set menus also available. Go for a warm pastry and hot drink while you wait for your cooked breakfast to make its way to you. Or get a pre-theatre/evening out set meal with a glass of wine.

  3. The Last Wine Bar
Retaining some of the old features from when it was once a shoe factory, the Last Wine Bar is situated in a pretty, cobbled area of Norwich – just by Norwich Playhouse – serving food based on their love for classic, well-loved dishes as well as a desire to be fresh and innovative. Fabulous day or night!

  4. Bishop’s Dining Room and Wine Bar
We seriously recommend this one for you starry-eyed lovers who are looking for the perfect date-night restaurant. The team are so attentive and oh so friendly, and the food! My goodness, the food is divine! Nestled in the heart of the Norwich Lanes, it’s also great for lunch.

  5. Benedicts
This has fast become a local favourite since it opened in 2015 – in fact people are travelling for miles to eat here. Simple and understated, it offers cuisine at its finest and most creative from Great British Menu winner Chef Richard Bainbridge.

  6. River Green Café
Speaking of vegetarian treats, here is yet another! The River Green Café in Trowse serves a huge range of food! From Moroccan spiced chickpeas to mushroom wellingtons to Thai curries – what’s not to like?

  7. The Assembly House
Nothing says quintessentially British than an afternoon tea and The Assembly House is where you need to be for this experience. From sandwiches that are so light, they melt in your mouth to the daintiest of dainty cakes and petit fours. Plus, the softest and warmest scones in all the land! The main question though – Jam or Cream on the scone first?... It’s one that’s divided the VisitNorwich family. Let us know!

  8. Barnham Broom Hotel, Golf & Spa
One of our very own went to Barnham Broom for a Wine and Dine evening and she was blown away. Matching the wine perfectly to each course, and the food being the best they can offer, she had a wonderful evening with her other half and both left very happy (and full!).
