From Friday 15th September 2017 19:00 to 21:30
Haydn: String Quartet in B flat Op.76 No.4 ‘Sunrise’
Shostakovich: String Quartet in D Op.83
Dvořák: String Quintet in E flat Op.97
Described by The Strad as presenting “a masterclass in unanimity of musical purpose, in which severity could melt seamlessly into charm and drama into geniality”, the Carducci Quartet is recognised as one of today’s most successful string quartets. Performing over ninety concerts worldwide each year, the quartet also run their own recording label Carducci Classics; an annual festival in Highnam, Gloucester; and in September 2014, directed their first Carducci Festival in Castagneto Carducci: the town from which they took their name.
Winners of several international competitions, the Anglo-Irish quartet regularly appears at prestigious venues across the globe including the Wigmore Hall, London and Carnegie Hall, New York. The Carducci Quartet was recently given the Royal Philharmonic Award for chamber music and song, for their Shostakovich 15 project, in which they presented the composer’s complete catalogue of works for quartet at several different international venues, sometimes all fifteen quartets in one day, to commemorate 40 years since the composer’s death.
At the centre of their programme is the anguished but beautiful 4th quartet by Shostakovich, flanked by Haydn’s ‘Sunrise’ and Dvořák s delightful string quintet, composed immediately after the ‘American’ quartet and of a very similar joyful and song-filled character.
Tickets: £25 – Includes a glass of champagne in the Saloon during the interval and an opportunity to view some of the other state rooms in the Hall.
