At the age of 20, Eric Lu was the acclaimed 1st prize winner of last year’s Leeds International Piano Competition. His intriguing programme here takes its point of departure from Schumann’s last composition, based on a theme he believed had been dictated to him by the spirits of Schubert and Mendelssohn. The first of Brahms’s late Intermezzos Op.117 seems to lay Schumann gently to rest; while Chopin’s 24 Preludes make their way through all the major and minor keys with kaleidoscopic shifts of mood.
Since taking away First Prize and Gold Medal at the The Leeds International Piano Competition back in September 2018, Eric has been busy touring China, Russia, Sweden, Denmark and France – but has found the time to stopover in the UK for his Proms and Norwich debuts.
The programme focuses on Schumann’s last composition (‘Ghost’ Variations in E flat) based on a theme that he believed had been dictated to him by the spirits of Schubert and Mendelssohn.
