From Saturday 3rd February 2018 19:30 to 19:30
Kabalevsky: Overture Colas Breugnon
Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No.3 in D minor
Martinů: Symphony No.3
For the Phil’s second purely orchestral concert on 3rd February, we welcome the outstanding young British pianist Alexander Ullman in Rachmaninov’s 3rd Piano Concerto, perhaps the most physically demanding in the repertoire. This notoriously challenging Concerto was the focus of the film Shine, based on the true story of Australian pianist David Helfgott who suffered a nervous breakdown trying to tackle it. There will be no such concerns for the brilliant young British pianist Alexander Ullman, one of the rising stars of his generation and extremely well-equipped to meet the Herculean challenge of performing the Rachmaninov. International critics have praised his ‘dazzling’, ‘majestic’ and ‘communicative’ playing along with his ‘technical finesse’ and ‘full-bodied tone’.
