From Saturday 17th March 2018 19:30 to 23:00
Brahms: Song of Destiny
Mendelssohn: Symphony-Cantata Lobgesang (‘Hymn of Praise’)
For the final concert of the season on 17th March, the Phil Chorus then return to more familiar territory and music by two of the greatest choral writers of the 19th century - Brahms’ beautiful Song of Destiny and Mendelssohn’s uplifting Symphony-Cantata Lobgesang or ‘Hymn of Praise’, otherwise known as his 2nd Symphony. Though on a much smaller scale, the Song of Destiny stands alongside his German Requiem as one of Brahms’ greatest choral triumphs, while the Mendelssohn gives a foretaste of the creative genius which peaked in his oratorio, Elijah, a few years later. Soloists in the Mendelssohn are Ruth Holton, soprano, and Christopher Steele, tenor. Ruth Holton made her name as a baroque specialist with John Eliot Gardiner, Ton Koopman and Gustav Leonhardt, while Christopher Steele’s career includes operatic roles for English National Opera and oratorio with Sir David Willcocks. David Dunnett conducts the Norwich Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus.
