Through a glass darkly: Will Teather exhibition at Anteros Arts Foundation

Creative Quarter Over the Water

The artist is constantly strives to take painting “on a walk,” some where unexpected.

The most familiar work here may be Teather’s magical realist paintings, which see unusual characters caught in uncanny situations. A collection of luminescent reinterpretations of Rembrandt’s self portraits attempt to explode the “noisy brushwork in the originals.”

These are juxtaposed with the sharp geometry of the artist’s fractal reinterpretations of Old Masters paintings, that reveal the underlying energy points in these compositions. The artist’s latest pivot has been to paint in diffused tones the sublime and childhood wonderment. His most radical works may be his painted globes, which create immersive worlds that reinvent traditional forms of perspective.

Will Teather is known for creating arresting images that reveal a unique imagination combined with a mastery of traditional skills. He has had an international career which included a spell as Anteros Artist-in-Residence and later joining their board of directors, helping to secure the current Norwich venue. This is his first exhibition with Anteros in 10 years and covers a cross section of his practice over this period, which has seen his work dramatically diversify in style and subject.”
