An Insider’s Guide to Norwich’s Lesser-Known Spots

by Katie Thompson

Norwich is a maverick city that’s yours to explore. So, head beyond the obvious and explore our storied streets for hidden gems and lesser-known spots.

These are the places that locals recommend, the unexpected corners that you’ll want to write home about. From independent cultural venues to tucked-away museums and unassuming architecture. Here, riverside retreats are just a short walk from award-winning nightclubs. The question is: which will you visit first?

Take a look below for our insider’s guide to Norwich’s lesser-known spots!

For the Theatregoers

Discover an up-and-coming artist at Norwich Arts Centre

Norwich is a UNESCO City of Literature, so there are plenty of stories to be told here- through dance, comedy, music, poetry, theatre and more!

On St Benedicts Street, you’ll find contemporary multi-arts venue Norwich Arts Centre. Here, you’re sure to stumble upon an exciting alternative line-up of performances. Think up-and-coming musicians, poets, and comedians from Norwich and beyond. Open your eyes to new experiences- there’s live performance art, drag shows for all and jazz where you least expect it!

Norwich’s Maddermarket Theatre is an intimate space with amazing acoustics

Also in the Lanes is the Maddermarket. Home to the Norwich Players, this community theatre is an intimate venue with incredible acoustics. (A former chapel, its vaulted ceiling was based on Rome’s very own Sistine Chapel.) It’s in this 300-seat space that you can groove to top tribute acts one night, laugh out loud at Norwich’s improv comedy or get lost in gripping drama the next!

Speaking of theatres, Norwich Puppet Theatre is a magical mix of artistic puppetry and stunning set design. As one of only three building-based puppet theatres in the country, you’ll be inspired by original shows, modern interpretations on classic tales, and genre-defying musical performances. There’s more to this medieval church than meets the eye!

For the Culture Vultures

Spend time in Strangers’ Hall’s tranquil Elizabethan Knot Garden

As a city steeped in history, any history buff or culture vulture should put Norwich at the top of their list!

While a first-time visit isn’t complete without a peek at Norwich Castle, make sure to see Strangers’ Hall too. This beautifully preserved former merchant’s house provides a glimpse into the lives of Norwich’s wealthy families- from the Tudors to Victorians. And don’t forget to step outside into the hidden Elizabethan Knot Garden. Take in centuries of history in this tranquil space.

Elsewhere, the Museum of Norwich is another tucked-away museum well worth a visit. In the heart of the Lanes on Bridewell Alley, it’s an ode to Norwich’s social history- from our once-thriving shoemaking industry to the life of Peter the Wild Boy and the original Samson and Hercules!

The South Asia Collection upper floor displays, which showcases a range of fascinating pieces

The South Asia Collection is home to beautiful South and Central Asian arts and crafts

The South Asia Collection is a hidden gem. Showcasing, preserving and supporting the arts and crafts of South and Central Asian countries- from India to Indonesia to Afghanistan- the museum’s displays are a beautiful insight into the cultures of another part of the world. (And you can take a piece home for yourself in their Country & Eastern shop!)

At Dragon Hall, history goes hand-in-hand with modern flair. This medieval trading hall stands out with its wooden beams and higgledy-piggledy tiles. Inside, it’s home to the National Centre for Writing– a place of invention and creativity. You can explore this blend of old meets now– drop in for free to hear stories of Norwich’s history (Sunday – Tuesday, until November).

For the Go-Getters

Relax in the sauna, try a cold plunge and relax at The Lion’s Den

Whether you love to explore, show your sporty side or you’re a night owl, Norwich has an amazing array of alternative things to do.

The Lion’s Den is a calming and restorative outdoor wellness space along the banks of the River Wensum. Surrounded by natural beauty, rippling water and cloaked by weeping willows, here you can connect with likeminded people as you paddle where early traders peddled, unwind in their sauna garden and brave a cold plunge!

At Gonzo’s, you’ll encounter three floors that make for a fantastic night out. Starting in Gonzo’s Tea Room, tuck into a juicy burger and fries before heading onto the roof terrace for a refreshing drink under wide skies. And when the sun’s gone down, head to Two Room- Radio 1’s Best Dance Venue in Europe- for a night of music, dancing and DJs!

Hear eccentric tales of Norwich’s history with Norwich Story Walks

Another fantastic way to expend some energy is at Bowling House. This is the place to bowl, sing and feast all under one roof! Start off with a round of retro ten-pin bowling, before indulging in a cocktail and sharing plate of their famous nachos and ending the night on the mic in their karaoke booth!
