Twenty Stories. One Norwich. The City of Stories.
Celebrate the launch of our special Twenty Stories series with a live poetry reading of local writer Daisy Henwood’s poem about Emma de Gauder’s brave feat in honour of English Tourism Week (Friday 13 March, 11am, Norwich Book Bench, Gentlemans Walk)!
Marking twenty years of championing the city, VisitNorwich presents an ambitious year-long cultural celebration: Twenty Stories. One City. The City of Stories. Written by local guest authors our stories range from medieval rebels and mystics to pioneering reformers, artists, entrepreneurs and unsung heroes, these are the people who shaped Norwich – and whose legacy can still be discovered across the city today.
Emma de Gauder
At just 16 years old, Emma de Gauder held Norwich Castle against the siege of William the Conqueror and negotiated surrender after her husband and brother plotted rebellion against him.
Step Into The Story- a city you don’t just read about, you experience
You can experience Emma’s legacy at Norwich Castle with their immersive projections and ‘sequel’ to the Bayeux Tapestry, a hand embroidered tale of the founding of Norwich Castle using a centuries-old technique. And for more about Emma herself, Norwich Story Walks’ Her Story Walk shines a light on this little-known female figure.
Did you know that even though Emma de Gauder was just 16 years old, she successfully negotiated safe passage to Normandy for herself and everyone within the castle? This, for the times as an extraordinary achievement.
