Culture in Norwich: 125 Years of Cromer Pier
When you think of the Norfolk coast, chances are you picture Cromer Pier!
And this year, this iconic landmark is celebrating its 125th anniversary! As home to the only full season end-of-pier show in the world, it’s the Summer and Christmas Shows that really highlight the mix of incredible performance, tradition and spectacle that make Cromer Pier stand out.
And that’s not all. A visit here can include crabbing, maritime history and a well-deserved sweet treat, too. Not forgetting those all-important sea views.
Here, we speak to James Balcazar, Marketing Manager for Cromer Pier, about the legacy of Cromer Pier and how we can enjoy this very special occasion!

Visit Cromer Pier to celebrate the icon’s 125th anniversary!
This year marks 125 years of the current Cromer Pier – congratulations! What makes the pier such an iconic Norfolk attraction? And do your guests come from further afield than Norfolk?
Thank you, it’s a milestone we’re incredibly proud of! Cromer Pier has been part of the town’s character for well over a century, and for many people it represents everything that’s great about the British seaside.
There’s something quite special about walking out along the pier with the North Sea stretching out around you. Whether it’s the sea air, the sound of the waves below, or the sense of history beneath your feet, the pier has a way of making people slow down and take it all in.
It’s also home to the beautiful Pavilion Theatre, which is famous for staging the only full-season end-of-pier show in the world. That tradition of live variety entertainment is something that really sets Cromer apart!
While the pier is deeply loved by people across Norfolk, we welcome visitors from much further afield too. Many guests travel from all over the UK specifically to see the Cromer Pier Show, while others discover the pier while exploring the North Norfolk coast. For plenty of families, it’s become part of their holiday tradition, returning year after year.
Will there be any celebrations to mark this special occasion?
Absolutely! Reaching 125 years feels like something worth celebrating properly, so we’ll be marking the anniversary throughout the year.
This year’s Cromer Pier Show will include moments that celebrate the pier’s long history and the generations of performers who have entertained audiences here since the early 1900s. Alongside the show, we’ll also be sharing stories and photographs from the pier’s past, giving people a chance to look back at some of the characters, performances and moments that have shaped its history.
We’re also hosting a number of special events across the year, including the Vintage Festival on 6th June, Heritage Day on 13th September, and the North Norfolk District Council Gala Day 8th June, all of which will bring the pier to life in different ways and celebrate its place at the heart of the community.
For many people locally, the pier is more than just a visitor attraction, it’s part of Cromer’s identity, so this anniversary is really about celebrating that shared history.

The Cromer Pier Show really is like no other- it’s part of the only full-season end-of-the-pier show in the world!
Cromer Pier is home to the only full season end-of-pier show in the world – wow! How have you endured when so many haven’t?
A big part of it comes down to tradition and the continued support of audiences who value live entertainment.
The Cromer Pier Show has built a strong reputation over the years for delivering a proper variety experience, the kind that mixes music, comedy, dance and speciality acts into one lively evening! It’s a format that might feel nostalgic, but when it’s done well it’s just as entertaining today as it ever was.
There’s also a huge amount of pride locally in keeping that tradition alive. Running a theatre at the end of a pier, with the North Sea never far away, comes with its challenges, but the commitment to maintaining that unique experience has helped the show continue when many others have disappeared.
Your popular Summer Show starts on 27 June. What can we expect to see this year?
The Cromer Pier Summer Show is all about energy, laughter and great live entertainment.
Audiences can expect a talented cast of singers, dancers, comedians and speciality performers coming together for a fast-paced evening of variety. There’s always a mix of musical performances, comedy moments and visual spectacle, all staged inside the Pavilion Theatre.
Every year the production evolves and brings something new, but the aim is always the same, to give people a really enjoyable night out by the sea.
What is it that audiences love about your Summer and Christmas Shows?
There’s something about live theatre that simply can’t be replicated anywhere else.
Audiences love the atmosphere inside the Pavilion Theatre, it’s intimate, lively and full of character. Because the theatre isn’t huge, there’s a real sense of connection between the performers and the audience.
Variety shows also keep people guessing. One moment you’re listening to a powerful musical performance, the next you’re laughing at a comedy routine or watching a visual act that leaves the audience amazed!
That mixture of entertainment, combined with the unique setting at the end of the pier, is what keeps audiences coming back year after year.

Sunset DJ sessions on Cromer Pier? Sign us up!
It’s not just theatre. Tell us about Cromer Pier’s other exciting events.
While the theatre is the heart of the pier, there’s always something else happening here too.
Events like Paws on the Pier (29th March) have become a favourite with dog lovers and families, bringing plenty of wagging tails and seaside fun. Our Sunset Sessions are another highlight, offering a relaxed atmosphere where people can enjoy music, food and drinks while watching the sun dip over the North Norfolk coast (July/ August).
Outside of the main Cromer Pier Show and Christmas seasons, we also host a series of live outdoor DJ events on the pier, making the most of that unique seaside setting and giving audiences the chance to enjoy great music right by the water.
These events give people another reason to spend time on the pier and experience it in a slightly different way.
And if I’m visiting Cromer Pier, how do you recommend spending my time here?
The best advice is simple, take your time and enjoy it.
Start with a stroll along the pier and take in the views across the sea and back towards the town. You’ll often spot people crabbing, which has become a bit of a Cromer tradition.
Just nearby is the lifeboat station, which is always fascinating to visit and an important part of the town’s maritime story. Many visitors also stop for a coffee at the Pavilion Bar while enjoying the sea air.
And if you can, make time for a show at the Pavilion Theatre. Watching live entertainment on the end of a pier is a truly special experience, and one that has been delighting audiences here for 125 years.
