What to Do in Norwich in Spring

by Katie Thompson

With warmer weather on its way, savour slices of sun rays and embrace fresh, blue-skied mornings in the City of Stories. Take the opportunity to be outside this spring- whether it’s exploring our winding city streets or in the presence of nature’s first blooms.

As longer days lift us up, Norwich’s mix of greenery, heritage and eateries make the city the ideal day, morning or afternoon out. (We suggest a spring break to really take it all in.) This is the season for exploring cultural landmarks and natural beauty, before those first alfresco coffees, pints and pub lunches. (That goes for Norfolk, too!)

Here’s our guide to Norwich in spring!

For Weekend Wanderings

Cathedral Close with a magnolia tree in spring

Come spring, Cathedral Close blooms in colour

Admire Norwich in Bloom

Come springtime, Norwich’s charming corners, gardens and churchyards begin to pop with colour. Whether it’s fluttering blush blossom or sweet-smelling lilac wisteria. Our top tip? Head to Cathedral Close for bursts of magnolia, sunshine-yellow daffodils and vivid green lawns.

Meander Along the River Wensum

Before it’s warm enough to get out onto the water (and to not have to worry about falling in!), an amble along the River Wensum is always a good idea. This is where spring begins. With bright and bushy trees rustling in the breeze, cool shade dotting the path and fuzzy goslings propelling themselves through the ripples.

Followed by a Well-Deserved Pub Lunch

Whilst looking out onto Norwich’s unique mix of modern and medieval, tuck into a plate of delicious pub grub at the Red Lion Bishopgate. Feel recharged as you feast on classics like crispy battered haddock with triple-cooked, hand-cut chips, juicy, grilled burgers and gravy-smothered sausage and mash.

The Cathedral of St John the Baptists Garden Cafe is both secluded and a great spot to admire the architecture

Shop Bustling Independents and Local Markets

Spring is the season of renewal. So, if you’re treating yourself to a little retail therapy, why not make it Norwich’s independents? From Atwin, Bowhill & Elliott and Jarrolds in the Lanes to the Royal Arcade’s fashion, beauty and lifestyle. And don’t forget The Forum, home to many a local makers market, where you can support Norfolk creatives in abundance.

Soak Up the Sun (and a Coffee) Alfresco

Thanks to Norwich’s many pavement cafes, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to people-watching with a coffee and cake in hand. Or for those quieter moments, pull up a chair on the sun-drenched patio of The Cathedral of St John the Baptist’s Garden Cafe and admire the impressive tower above.

Stop by Beer Hatch for a Brewery Takeover

On a sunny weekend afternoon, treat yourself to an ice-cold craft beer from buzzing bottle shop Beer Hatch. Local, of course. (Or take a bottle home as a souvenir.) Chances are you’ll stumble on an exciting event. As you sip, savour guest kegs and live music. Whether you prefer a sour, stout, lager or ale.

Getting Your Culture Fix

Paul Dickson’s walking tours are a wonderful way to see and get to know the city during milder climes

Traverse the City of Stories with a Tour

With shafts of sunlight illuminating hidden corners and amplifying eye-catching architecture, join Paul Dickson to find out a little more of Norwich’s rich history. From 1000 years of footsteps to the families, figures, Strangers and stories that are embedded in every cobble, it’s time to take a look.

Take a Moment at The Julian Shrine

Step into the footsteps of Lady Julian of Norwich and embrace a moment of contemplation in The Julian Shrine’s cool and quiet anchoress cell. Then take a seat outside in the greenery of their walled garden, an urban oasis nestled in flint-knapped history.

Feel the Buzz of the Norfolk & Norwich Festival

Taking over Chapelfield Gardens and beyond for 17 days of exciting events and live entertainment, May is made for the Norfolk & Norwich Festival (8 – 24 May)! With a not-to-be-missed line-up made for families, friends, couples and solo culture lovers, there’s so much to see and do. Free and ticketed.

Explore Norfolk

A walk around Taverham Mill to see their Highland cattle is a lovely spring day out

Say Hello to Highland Cattle at Taverham Mill

As hazy sunshine glistens on dew-dropped grasses, fledgling birds twitter overhead and the first signs of insect life drift from flower to flower, Taverham Mill’s herd of friendly Highland cattle are welcomed back into the fold. Say hello to these curious cows as you enjoy the 100-acre nature reserve.

Marvel at a Stately Home

Call it the Bridgerton effect. Tap into your love of period dramas and architecture with a tour of Holkham Hall (open from 29 March). Ensconced in 25 acres of rolling parkland, this 18th century, Palladian-style house is home to breathtaking marble interiors, grand state rooms and art by Old Masters.
