Rooted in the Landscape

Cathedral Quarter

This exhibition marks the culmination of the ambitious 1000 Vessel Project by artist Sarah Cannell, including the final 100 vessels and accompanying publication. Sarah is an established landscape painter based in Norfolk. She set herself the challenge of creating 1000 ceramic vessels from a standing start in 2021 and has used the project to shift her practice from 2D to 3D, paint to ceramic, to explore and develop methods of making and the power of creativity to hold and ultimately heal us. 1000 Vessel Project is an extended exploration into creative process and ceramics in the face of adversity.

‘Bring me the sunset in a cup’ Emily Dickinson

Sarah has invited three fellow contemporary landscape artists, Helen Derbyshire, Louise Dougherty and Caroline Mackintosh, to share the space at Mandell’s Gallery in Norwich and celebrate the landscape which jointly inspires them. Their practices are also deeply informed by walking and engaging with the ancient, enduring landscapes of Suffolk and Norfolk. The exhibition brings together painting, ceramics and mixed media, to explore how place, memory and intense focus shape artistic responses to the natural environment.

‘You can’t use up creativity, the more you use the more you have’. Maya Angelou

Together, the artists featured in Rooted in the Landscape offer a rich and varied dialogue between contemporary art and the enduring character of East Anglia’s landscapes. The exhibition celebrates walking as a creative act and explores how sustained engagement with place and practice can shape artistic vision, deepen our understanding of landscape today and reconnect us with ourselves.
