Twenty Stories. One Norwich. The City of Stories.

Marking twenty years of championing the city, VisitNorwich presents an ambitious year-long cultural celebration: Twenty Stories. One City. The City of Stories. Written by local guest authors our stories range from medieval rebels and mystics to pioneering reformers, artists, entrepreneurs and unsung heroes, these are the people who shaped Norwich – and whose legacy can still be discovered across the city today.

Rumsey Wells (1877 – 1937)
A successful hat making business, Rumsey was the son of Thomas Wells – senior partner in the firm of T. Wells & Son a firm making award-winning hats and caps. Sold to trade and consumers T. Wells & Son were the first makers of sporting caps for hunting, racing, cycling, boating, riding, smoking, shooting and travelling. They also moved with the times designing new styles of headgear with the advent of the motor car.

Step Into The Story- a city you don’t just read about, you experience
The Museum of Norwich (adults £8.20, children £6.90) has an excellent exhibition case dedicated to Rumsey Wells. And you can stop for a pint, a G&T and a bite to eat at The Rumsey Wells public house where the shop was once located.

Did you know that Rumsey Wells was a man ahead of this time? He recognised the art of storytelling in his marketing producing booklets and pamphlets with stories of Norwich promoting his caps as the most expensive in the world.
