Live Like a Local on a Norwich City Break

Live Like a Local on a Norwich City Break

by Katie Thompson

Norwich. Named the Best Place to Live in the UK 2026 by The Sunday Times.

It’s the only location to have featured in all 14 editions of The Sunday Times Best Places to Live Guide. And for good reason.

Norwich is a city known for “its unique blend of historic character, urban buzz and liveability.” We’re the only English city in a national park (the Broads National Park, in case you’re wondering), cosmopolitan and full of creativity, yet with a distinctive, welcoming small-town feel.

Now’s the time for a city break in our fine city. Whilst you don’t have to uproot and head to Norwich just yet, living like a local is the next best thing. Spend an unforgettable stay here, but one that’s a little less obvious, recommended by someone who truly knows.

With our itinerary, we take you on a journey of modern culture, medieval sightseeing, local dining and natural beauty. This is how to live like a local on a city break in Norwich!

The Sunday Times Best Places to Live 2026

From green spaces and culture to high streets and everyday living, including schools and transport, The Sunday Times’ expert judges travelled the width and breadth of the country, discovering our best cities, towns and villages. Ultimately, Norwich is the Best Place to Live in the UK for 2026.

Showcasing locations that are full of life, bursting with natural beauty, culture and a sense of community, Norwich encompasses all these things. It’s “trendy but kind”, where a bustling city centre goes hand in hand with rural living and you can “probably afford to buy a home.”

One thing’s for certain according to Helen Davies, Best Places to Live Editor: “the people that live [here] are proud to call [Norwich] home.”

Day 1
Sainsbury Centre/ Norwich Market/ The Lanes/ Live Entertainment

//See & Do: Sainsbury Centre; The South Asia Collection; live theatre, music and entertainment.
//Eat: Norwich Market; Sir Toby’s Beers.
//Shop: Norwich Lanes; JarroldsAtwinDipples.

Take a trip to the Sainsbury Centre and discover the incredible art in this futuristic building

Morning

Whether you’re a first-timer or Norwich native, the Sainsbury Centre always appeals. And it’s easy to get to- just a 20-minute bus journey on the 25 or 26 from the city centre. This world-class art museum is home to pieces spanning thousands of years, from Mesoamerican ceramics to 20th century paintings by the likes of Bacon and Picasso, so, every time you visit, chances are you’ll discover details you hadn’t before.

Housed in a futuristic Norman Foster-designed building, it’s little wonder the Sainsbury Centre transcends the expectations of a traditional museum. Here, art is seen as a living lifeforce, one you can interact with, be that hugging a Henry Moore, lounging beneath a Giacometti suspended from the ceiling or becoming your own work of art. And that’s without their thought-provoking exhibition seasons, which explore questions like ‘How Do We Find Love?’ and ‘What is the Meaning of Life?’.

Outside, explore their Sculpture Park. Pieces by Antony Gormley, Anthony Caro and more populate the unique mix of Brutalist architecture and natural beauty, inviting you to take a stroll across acres of parkland. Or admire sculpture by Rebcca Warren and John Davies from the bright Modern Life Cafe. (Don’t leave without sampling the brownies!)

Once you’ve arrived back in the centre, head to our 900-year-old market for lunch. If you’re searching for street food, this is the place to be! Here in Norwich Market, you can find anything from New York-style sandwiches to light-as-air Bao Buns to moreish Mexican tacos, authentic tapas with a glass of wine, Indian curries and good old British fish and chips! Is your mouth watering yet?

While you’re here, we always recommend a visit to Sir Toby’s Beers. This beer bottle shop showcases the latest in East Anglian and international craft beers, ideal for trying something new. Saying that, we love to return for their signature cherry beer! Their buzzing bar is ideal for a spot of people-watching, too, with many a local visiting for an after-work or weekend drink.

After lunch at Norwich Market, discover everything on offer in the Lanes

Afternoon

We suggest a relaxing stroll after all that eating! Start with a visit to The South Asia Collection. You’ll find this hidden gem tucked off Bethel Street- it was once a Victorian roller-skating rink and houses a breathtaking wooden ceiling- and be met with a myriad of South Asian treasures. Think intricately carved woodwork, beautiful woven rugs and more that conserves, preserves and showcases the continent’s craftsmanship. (While you’re here, it would be rude not to browse the lovely wares in their Country and Eastern shop.)

Then follow the road well-travelled through our ancient Lanes, where independents line cobbled streets and every corner offers something new. Head down Lower Goat Lane and along Pottergate to London Street, Swan Lane and Bedford Street, before taking a left onto Bridewell Alley (a go-to for vintage). If you fancy a little shopping along the way, Norwich is home to a wealth of independents that are something different from home, perfect for a souvenir of your time here. We recommend stopping off at Jarrolds for local food and drink, Dipples for jewellery or watch lovers, and Atwin for Norfolk-made conscious fashion and lifestyle pieces.

Enjoy an evening of entertainment in the intimacy of Norwich Theatre Playhouse

Evening

With six theatres and a whole host of vibrant music venues, it’s got to be an evening of live entertainment. Every night, you’ll find locals waiting in anticipation for the curtain to go up, whether it’s for a West End show, laugh-out-loud comedy, personal poetry readings or Norwich-born musicians.

From the large stage of Norwich Theatre Royal to the intimacy of the PlayhouseMaddermarket Theatre and more, by way of award-winning Norwich Arts Centre or hidden favourite The Holloway, get lost in the essence of Norwich’s cultural scene. You’ll fall asleep with a smile lighting up your face and goosebumps tingling on your arms.

Day 2
Elm Hill/ The Lions’ Den River/ Norwich Cathedral/ Red Lion Bishopgate

//See & Do: Norwich Cathedral; Elm Hill; riverside walk.
//Eat: Refectory Cafe; Red Lion Bishopgate; The Lions’ Den River.

Our tranquil riverside walk is a mix of nature and history, with landmarks like Cow Tower along the route

Morning

Start your day in our beautiful Cathedral Quarter at Elm Hill (our most complete medieval street and one straight out of a fairytale). Here, you can admire incredible architecture and dappled sunlight. Look up at the traditional beams, higgledy-piggledy silhouettes and even a thatched roof or two! You might recognise this little street from films such as Stardust.

At the bottom of Elm Hill, turn left toward ancient Fye Bridge and along our luscious riverside walk. Here, grand weeping willows trail in the water while bright white swans glide by local landmarks like the ivy-clad St James Mill and medieval Cow Tower. Amble along this meandering path and embrace a sense of peace- these are the fringes of the Broads National Park. (If getting out onto the water is more your thing, we recommend a few hours with Pub & Paddle. From Elm Hill Quay, you can canoe, kayak or paddleboard along this historic waterway, stopping at local pubs along the way for a well-deserved drink and a bite to eat!)

Soon, you’ll encounter The Lions’ Den River. This secluded community space is home to wood-fired riverside saunas, bracing ice baths and a cosy cafe that’s always humming with activity. Here, you’re invited to relax and meet the locals- you’ll soon be welcomed into the fray. Settle under the canopy, surrounded by twinkling lights and crackling fires (and treat yourself to toasted marshmallows), or take a seat alfresco under the trees with a smooth coffee or non-alcoholic refreshment.

Cathedral Close

Take a stroll in our beautiful Cathedral Quarter- home to Elm Hill and Norwich Cathedral

Early Afternoon

Then stroll into our charming Cathedral Close. You can always use Norwich Cathedral’s spire as your guide!

Our 900-year-old Romanesque cathedral is a beautiful sight to behold. With a towering spire, the largest monastic cloisters in the country- aka the perfect place to pretend you’re in a scene straight out of Hogwarts, and surrounded by 44-acres of charming grounds, this is an iconic spot to explore for an hour or two. We suggest a free hour-long tour followed by a sweet treat or flaky sausage roll in the Refectory Cafe and a visit to the fragrant herb garden.

Worked up a thirst? Head back on yourself through picturesque Hook’s Walk and along Bishopgate to the Red Lion pub. (Take in the blooming magnolias and blossom trees on your way!) Bag yourself a seat in the sun on their riverside terrace for a glass of something refreshing. Add a selection of small plates or moreish pub classics for lunch and embrace the final moments of your stay, watching the River Wensum flow by!
