Silent cinema brought thrillingly back to life.
One of the most influential horror films ever made meets live music as MINIMA returns to Norwich Playhouse to perform their original score to Robert Wiene’s 1920 masterpiece The Cabinet of Dr Caligari.
The story follows the mysterious Dr Caligari and Cesare, a somnambulist apparently able to predict the future. When a series of murders begins, they become part of an increasingly nightmarish mystery.
With its distorted sets, jagged architecture and sinister shadows, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari helped define German Expressionist cinema and created a visual language that continues to influence horror more than a century later.
Bristol-based four-piece MINIMA specialise in creating contemporary live scores for silent film. Using cello, double bass, guitars, synthesiser, percussion and more, the band transform the screening into an immersive live experience.
If you’ve never watched a silent film accompanied by live musicians, this is a fantastic place to start.
