This Halloween, skip the ghost stories. Norwich’s own history is darker, and it all happened on streets you still walk today.
The Dark History of Norwich is a new evening walking tour running this autumn, from 16 October to 6 November. Meet on the City Hall steps at 6pm as the light fades, then follow local storytellers Holly and Joolz through Davey Place, into the old castle ditches beside the Shirehall, along a nameless lane by the Bridewell and over the cobbles of Elm Hill. Expect murder, death, fire, flood and plague, plus the legend of a body that vanished from Elm Hill.
The tour finishes in Tombland Alley, by which time night has fallen. It’s dark history rather than jump scares: nobody leaps out of a doorway, because what really happened here is grim enough.
The walk lasts about 90 minutes. It’s £0 to book, and you tip at the end, usually £10 to £20 per person, by cash or card. Places are limited, so book ahead. Bring a friend. You’ll want one.
