The Best Fish and Chips in Norwich

Crispy battered cod. Mushy peas. Lashings of salt and vinegar. Jumbo sausages. Chips and gravy. Whatever your regular order from the local chippy, there’s one thing everyone can agree on. Fish and chips at lunch or dinner is always a good idea.

Who doesn’t love some fluffy chips to fill you up on those busy days in the city? Or a bit of fresh battered fish to enjoy when you’re at the seaside? After all, Norwich is only a 30-minute drive from the coast! Head to Cromer, Wells-Next-the-Sea, or Hunstanton, among other beautiful stretches of beach to enjoy (more on those later).

And best of all – Norwich and Norfolk are home to some of the best chippy’s around. So, if you’re looking for the perfect place to grab a quick – and affordable – bite to eat for the whole family, look no further. We’ve rounded up the very best spots right here.

Norwich

Grosvenor Fish Bar, Lower Goat Lane

Of course, Grosvenor Fish Bar must be at the top of our list. This popular spot is a Norwich institution, and the place to go for delicious fish and chips. It’s not just the classics on the menu here either. There are several specials to sink your teeth into, including the ‘High Sea’ – the fish and chips equivalent of afternoon tea.

It comes with battered squid, cod cheeks, tiger prawns, cod goujons, battered gherkins and mini clam sliders with chips and dips. We recommend enjoying this feast downstairs in the shop’s own underground cave seating area! Eating in, you can enjoy this delicious assortment for £33 for two and £19 for one person.

Lucy’s Fish and Chips, Norwich Market

Lucy’s Fish and Chips on the market is the ideal place to go for proper, traditional fish and chips. This Norwich Market staple has been serving since 1971, making it over 50 years old! And make no mistake, this chippy has lasted so long for good reason – it’s delicious. From the cooked-to-order flaky fish, to the generous servings of chips, Lucy’s has perfected their craft.

They have a few specials up their sleeve too – including battered mince pies at Christmas and battered crème eggs at Easter! And if you’re looking for somewhere sheltered to enjoy your food, simply head round the corner and find Lucy’s seating area, complete with salt and vinegar to keep your chips in the perfect ratio.

Plus, Lucy’s now has two stalls on the market, with one dedicated to vegan fish and chips, so everyone can enjoy the delicious food on offer without worry!

Ron’s Fish and Chips, Norwich Market

Ron’s Fish and Chips is another Norwich Market stall with a long history. Established in 1953 by Ron’s grandfather, today the third generation of the family are hard at work serving up tasty homemade chips for Norwich locals and visitors alike.

Grab yourself some cod or sausage fried in their own homemade batter – it’s really tasty. Then, once you’ve made your order, head up to the top of Market Place to sit and enjoy your grub while looking out over the market. It’s the perfect way to catch your breath and take in the sights on those sunny days.

Bishop Bridge Fish and Chips, Bishop Bridge Road

The great thing about fish and chips is you can eat them on the move. And what better way to do that than by enjoying an evening stroll by the River Wensum? For that, Bishop Bridge Fish and Chips is the ideal place to stop and refuel.

Treat yourself to some freshly fried golden chips, and maybe some battered cod or sausage, and get strolling down the river with some warming food in hand. It’s even more beautiful as the air is crisp and the sun is setting! Sounds like a great way to spend the evening to us.

The Ivy, London Street

You probably weren’t expecting to see The Ivy on this list, but if you’re looking to make your meal into a fancier night out where you can still enjoy a classic fish and chips, this is the place to go. For £18.95, The Ivy serves up North Sea cod in their homemade ‘The Ivy 1907’ batter with mushy peas, thick cut chips, and tartare sauce. What more could you want?
