The Best Pancakes in Norwich

by Katie Thompson

Sometimes a sweet treat is just the ticket- whether it’s for breakfast, dessert or as a snack. And when a pile of perfectly fluffy pancakes is served in front of you, it would be rude to say no.

Maybe you’re celebrating Shrove Tuesday with a stack dripping in syrup? Or perhaps you’re partial to a savoury crepe at all times of year. If in doubt, you can’t go wrong with lemon and sugar. No matter how you like your pancakes, Norwich is home to plenty of eateries to get your fix. No flipping required.

Here are our top picks for the best pancakes in Norwich!

 Christophe’s Kitchen at Yalm

At Christophe’s Kitchen, pancakes are for life!

As they say at Christophe’s Crêpes (a sugary Norwich institution you’ll find in the Lanes and at Yalm), ‘pancakes are for life’. This is a sentiment we’re sure you can get behind- especially when it means sweet treats available all day long!

Christophe’s Kitchen specialises in delicious desserts created with their signature light-as-air crêpes. This includes fruity variations like raspberry and pistachio, crêpe cakes (all 38 layers of them!), crêpe cheesecakes (including banoffee), and traditional and mini-Dutch pancakes! Plus, depending on when you visit, you might be lucky enough to try seasonal specials at Valentine’s, Easter and Christmas!

Goat Shed

You won’t be short of sauce with the Goat Shed’s pancakes!

Just a short drive from Norwich’s city centre- it’s only 10 miles and totally worth it, is the Goat Shed.

At the Goat Shed Kitchen, their yummy pancake stacks are quite rightly part of their G.O.A.T breakfasts (served all day no matter when you need your pancake fix). And whether it’s a classic or deluxe stack, you can be sure they’ll be suitably drenched in just the right amount of syrup. We recommend keeping an eye out for their pancake specials too- especially when their popular Pancake Club returns for Pancake Day during February (14 – 21 February, excluding Sundays). Because when they include combinations like strawberry cheesecake and white chocolate, cookie chunks, vanilla ice cream and caramel popcorn, and BBQ chicken wings with smashed avocado,  you can’t go wrong!

And if you want to recreate them at home, you’ll find the eggs, fruit and bacon in their farm shop!

The Waffle House

Not necessarily pancakes, but these waffles are just as delicious!

So, this one’s not technically pancakes, but there’s no denying The Waffle House’s creations rival some of the tastiest stacks out there. And when you can opt for sweet or savoury (or even sweet and savoury) for breakfast, lunch and dinner, it’ll be difficult to choose just one. Plus, you can cater your waffle to your tastes- whether that’s white, whole meal, gluten free or vegan.

To start the day, why not try a halloumi and hash stack? You could follow this with a refreshing Greek salad waffle or spicy bang-bang chicken. And if you come for one thing only, we can’t get enough of the dark Belgian chocolate and honeycomb mousse!

Slice + Dice

Looking for vegan pancakes? Look no further than Slice + Dice

Slice + Dice is a go-to spot for any vegan or vegetarian hoping to enjoy a towering stack of fluffy (egg-free) pancakes. Served as part of their brunch menu (until 12.30pm, weekends only), you can savour each bite as you enjoy a board game or two in their cosy cafe. Everything here is 100% plant based.

The toppings are up to you. Whether it’s a take on a classic with maple yoghurt, homemade berry compote and candied pecans, the can’t-go-wrong combination of Biscoff and banana, or a warming dish of stewed apple, vanilla yoghurt and flaked almond dusted with cinnamon!

And on Pancake Day itself, their special one-day-only menu boasts savoury galettes, from creamy garlic mushroom to quesadilla, and exciting flavour combinations like homemade lemon curd an blueberries, rock road (with chocolate pancakes!) and poached pear and sticky toffee sauce!

The Assembly House

Pancake

Treat yourself to a breakfast cocktail with your Assembly House pancakes!

Did you know The Assembly House’s breakfast isn’t just for guests? And we can safely say you won’t be disappointed (served daily 8am – 11am).

So, on the days when you’re craving a little sugar to boost your morning, we suggest tucking into The Assembly House’s light buttermilk pancakes. There are a number of variations to choose from, whether that’s maple syrup and bacon, berry compote and creme fraiche, or even chocolate hazelnut sauce and chocolate ice cream!

For a hint of luxury, why not accompany your pancakes with a breakfast cocktail? Bloody Mary anyone?

Cosy Club

For pancakes in stylish surrounds, Cosy Club is the spot to know

Another go-to brunch spot (served until 4pm, breakfast served until 12pm), Cosy Club will elevate your experience with their stunning interiors and a plate piled high with mouthwatering American-style pancakes.

Opt for streaky bacon, blueberries and maple syrup. Or how about Greek yoghurt, blueberries, berry compote and chai granola for something sweet yet refreshing? And if you’ve saved room in anticipation, you can choose between a stack of 3 or a stack of 6 for those who just can’t get enough!

William & Florence

Enjoy a plate of pancakes at relaxed neighbourhood pub William & Florence

William & Florence is a relaxed neighbourhood pub that’s popular with locals, known for its delicious brunch menu (Monday – Saturday, 10am – 2pm, Sunday, 10am – 12pm). In the cosy surrounds of their stylish restaurant, you can watch the world go by on Unthank Road on a bustling weekend morning or treat yourself to a mid-week plate of pancakes!

And their menu suits all tastes and many dietary requirements, with favourite streaky bacon and maple syrup, summery vegan yoghurt and strawberries and indulgent Biscoff all ready to be devoured.

Elsewhere in Norwich

No. 33 is another popular pancake spot in Norwich

Fresh and fluffy pancakes are never far away! Elsewhere in Norwich, we’re certainly not short of some brilliant breakfasts and brunches (we’re looking at you Olive’s).

At No. 33 (located on Exchange Street or in Chapelfield Gardens), tuck into their towering American-style stack (with dairy or vegan) with a cascade of fresh fruit and maple syrup. While at the heart of the Lanes, you can enjoy classic pancakes at J.C. Pinto or, for those with a sweet tooth, a black forest variety topped with flaked almonds, vanilla mascarpone, chocolate sauce and kirsch cherries. Ber Street Kitchen is also another amazing pancake option for breakfast and brunch- you won’t be short on sauce here!

And pancakes don’t have to be sweet. On Tombland, you’ll find Vietnamese Pho, who offer traditional street food like crispy rice pancakes stuffed with herbs, chicken and prawns (or tofu for veggies and vegans). Yum!
