KÖZÖ (Structure): Ceramics by Pat Southwood

Cathedral Quarter

This autumn, Mandell’s Gallery on historic Elm Hill hosts KÖZÖ (Structure), an exhibition of original ceramics by Norfolk artist Pat Southwood.

Drawing inspiration from extensive travels through Tokyo, Nagoya, and Kyoto, Southwood translates modern architectural structures—from soaring skyscrapers and train platforms to power grids—into refined ceramic forms. Pushing high-fired stoneware to a soft, sculptural near-black, she contrasts the dark clay body with silky, burnished porcelain slip.

Surfaces employ Mishima, a traditional Korean and Japanese technique where carved designs are filled with porcelain slip and scraped back at the leather-hard stage. Featuring both wheel-thrown and slab-built vessels, KÖZÖ bridges ancient craft and modern geometry, inviting visitors to experience the collection through both sight and touch.

Opening Event: Saturday 12 September, 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm, All Welcome!
