UEA Choir & Symphony Orchestra concert: Italy Home and Away

Norwich Lanes

UEA Choir and Symphony Orchestra warmly invite you to join them for their autumn concert ‘Italy Home and Away’, on Thursday 24th November at 7:30pm at The Halls (St Andrew’s), Norwich.

Massing more than 150 performers on stage, comprising students, staff and members of the local community, the choir and orchestra will perform music by Richard Strauss (Aus Italien) and Giacomo Puccini (Preludio Sinfonico and Messa di Gloria), which open a window onto a thousand-year vista of Italy.

Two movements from the 22-year-old Richard Strauss’ travelogue Aus Italien depict firstly the pastoral beauty of the Roman Campagna, the most painted landscape in Europe, and secondly the tumultuous street life of Naples (the latter using an instantly recognisable tune that brought Strauss a whole heap of trouble!). These are framed by two of Puccini’s most important stepping stones. The Preludio Sinfonico glances toward both Wagner and the student Puccini’s teacher Ponchielli, but is instantly recognisable as the mature genius in embryo. The Messa di Gloria is his farewell to family expectation of a career in music for the church, and he bids it adieu with nods to both his Renaissance forebears and his hero Verdi.

The choir and orchestra will be joined in their performance of Messa di Gloria by soloists Ben Johnson (tenor) and Lancelot Nomura (bass).

Tickets cost £5 – £13. Tickets are available to purchase: online from www.uea.ac.uk/uea-life/campus-life/campus-facilities/music-centre/whats-on/buy-tickets, or on the door (card or cheque only).
