Shop ‘Til You Drop

There’s nothing quite like a shopping spree in Norwich. From independent stores and high-street favourites, to Norwich’s famed outdoor market – whatever purchases you’re eyeing up; you’ll find everything you need in the city. Here’s our run down of the perfect places to go mooching and find a bargain or two…

The Lanes

With a diverse mix of galleries, cafes and restaurants, there’s plenty to explore. Check out Upper St Giles street with its many Georgian buildings for a Bridgerton-esque experience and a quirky selection of shops.

Meander down to Upper and Lower Goat Lane which are packed full of independent boutiques and gift shops. Lisa Angel is the go-to for pretty jewellery and homeware, while Imelda’s fascinating collection of shoes are brilliant if you’re looking to treat yourself (or someone else, if you’re feeling nice.) Or Visit Dipples in Swan Lane, where you can browse opulent watches and fine jewellery sparkling with colourful gemstones.

For high-street favourites look no further than London Street. You’ll find Waterstones, White Stuff, Bravissimo, The Body Shop and many more. But it’s not just all high-street names – there’s lovely independent stores intermingled throughout the street.  And don’t forget to check out The Book Hive, an award-winning bookshop boasting a unique collection in a stylish setting.

Department Stores Galore

Let’s be honest, we all like a bit of convenience. So having everything from homeware and clothes to books and toys in the same shop is ideal. And there’s plenty of department store options in Norwich.

Rampant Horse Street is home to Marks and Spencer, with food, clothes and homeware. There’s also a John Lewis down on All Saint’s Green which is brilliant for all the electronics and home furnishings you may need. And for those who are fashion-forward, take advantage of their free stylist service. Sit back and relax in a luxurious changing room while your stylist searches through a wide range of quality brands to find you a stunning outfit. Perfect for those who want a stress-free shopping experience.

Chantry Place Norwich

For even more choice, head on down to Chantry Place which not only houses Apple, but is home to a food court, HMV, Urban Outfitters, H&M, Zara and more!

And we can’t forget Norwich’s flagship independent department store Jarrolds, twice winner of the UK’s Independent Department Store of the Year. There’s something for everyone with 5 floors, 52 departments, 3 restaurants and a coffee bar (although we’ll have to wait a short while longer until the restaurants are open again). And for a little Norfolk flavour, check out their wide range of local food and drink goods.

Sweet Treats

After a busy day of shopping, who doesn’t like to treat themselves with a little something sweet? Visit  Yalm Foodhall in the Royal Arcade and sample the delights of MILK‘s iced desserts, or if you’re looking for some baked goods, take in the amazing smells and tastes at St Giles Pantry on Upper St Giles Street.

Cool down with an authentic artisan gelato from Café Gelato on Opie Street. Made in the traditional Italian way, with carefully selected fresh ingredients, it’s no wonder the place has become a haunt for famous faces. Most recently, Emma Thomson paid a visit while filming in Norwich for her latest film. Prepare for a queue (even when the weather’s cold!) Although, we can assure you, it’s worth the wait.

For a little je ne sais quoi, get yourself a crêpe loaded with goodies from Christophe’s Crêpes, with outdoor dining available at the store on Pottergate, or take away from its street spot in Davey place.

And we can’t forget Norwich’s Outdoor Market which has an abundance of treats for you to get your teeth stuck into. Cakes, biscuits and sweets are all available from one of the oldest open-air markets in the country, so take your time to explore its many offerings.

Unique Finds

There’s nothing better than searching through the shelves and poking into corners until finally spotting that one unique little item that you must have, because it’s just so you. If you love getting your hands on one-of-a-kind items, there’s nowhere better than Norwich to sate your need.

Country & Eastern museum shop is just the ticket for spectacular items big or small, with an exciting array of artefacts from South East Asia. Have a browse in the impressive store for some interesting and unusual finds, from decorative furniture and furnishings to clothes and jewellery.

Country & Eastern, Bethel Street

Magdalen Street is a veritable treasure trove of shops with unique offerings. Take your time to wander around Aladdin’s Cave or Looses Emporium for vintage and antique collectables, furniture and more. Interested in music? Beatnik’s Records houses the classics on CD and Vinyl, as well as stocking video games.

For a fashion makeover head back on over to the Lanes and visit Slayyy Vintage, which started out as a stall on the market. With handpicked and vintage clothes, it’s perfect for eco-conscious shoppers. Sue Ryder Vintage & Retro is also a great place to find a bargain and breathe new life into old clothes.

If you’re looking to splash your cash on some accessories for your new outfit, take a gander at Sonkai Jewellers for a collection of modern and eye-catching jewellery – you can even commission bespoke handmade pieces.
