The Everyday Moments of a Spring Day in Norwich

The Everyday Moments of a Spring Day in Norwich

by Katie Thompson

A soft breeze ruffles vivid green trees, while blush pink blossom confetti swirls along our medieval streets, delicate and fluttering. You can sense the anticipation of warmer weather. Locals bustle about Norwich Market and visitors soak up the sun on The Forum steps, faces turned to the sheet of blue sky above.

Before the height of summer and the buzz of upcoming festivals, here we capture the everyday moments of a spring day in Norwich.

Shafts of sunlight slice through medieval buildings, illuminating historical architecture that’s now home to a wealth of independent shops, eateries and creative endeavours. Norwich is known as a walkable city, one that invites you into secluded corners and welcomes you with open arms. At this time of year, a blanket of calm descends and locals potter about their everyday errands, treating themselves to fresh fruit from Norwich Market, a zingy juice from the Lanes and an idle afternoon with their favourite book in Cathedral Close.

If you’re visiting our City of Stories, soak it all in at a slower pace. Switch off, put your phone away and enjoy the sights that surround you. The sing-song tune of a red-breasted robin, whispering willow trees, the squeals of young families.

Start with a stroll along cobbled Elm Hill, the city’s most complete medieval street. At its highest point, you’ll spot one of few thatched roof buildings. Unassuming yards and quiet alleys are dappled in leafy shadow as you wind your way past stores housing stationery, jewellery, antiques and even teddy bears! From here, head along the meandering river Wensum, which, at this time of year, is alive with bluebells, cow parsley and young cygnets.

Reaching Pull’s Ferry, turn right into charming Cathedral Close- chances are you’ll have already spotted Norwich Cathedral’s soaring spire. Former stables make way for quaint cottages, walled gardens alive with sweet-scented blooms and magnificent monastic cloisters.

While you’re here, explore every corner- you never know what you may find, be it Edith Cavell’s resting place or Budge, the Cathedral’s resident cat curled up. Opposite the entrance to the Refectory Cafe, the back entrance to the Herb Garden beckons. This former kitchen garden used to serve the monks that lived in the Refectory. It feels like it’s only for those in the know, with a flint wall curving round and leading you to borders fresh with rosemary, thyme, mint and more. Trowels, forks and buckets are placed haphazardly on the gravel, ready for use by the gardeners at any moment.

Ambling under Ethelbert Gate, across Tombland and into the Norwich Lanes introduces you back to the hustle and bustle of the everyday. See locals and visitors alike with Cafe Gelato’s creamy ice cream dripping down their wrists, groups of friends, young and old, queueing outside Finnie’s Juice Bar for a fluffy focaccia, and humming market stalls where bags are stuffed with locally grown produce.

Norwich is a city that offers a unique mix of lively independent spirit and calm corners where heritage and nature take precedence. On a visit to our fine city, why not do it how the locals do and embrace these everyday moments?
