This museum celebrates the arts, crafts and culture of South Asia and neighbouring countries. The collection focuses primarily on India & Pakistan and to a lesser extent on Afghanistan, Burma, Bangladesh, Thailand and Indonesia. It was recently assessed as the pre-eminent collection of its type in the United Kingdom.
Housed in a restored Victorian Skating Rink on Bethel Street, it is right in the centre of Norwich, close to The Forum and The Market. It is worth a visit, if only to view, the interior architecture and learn of the varied uses the building was put to after its untimely demise as a roller-skating rink. These include its use as a Vaudeville Theatre and the first Citadel for the Salvation Army in Norwich and its opening by General Booth.
An excellent museum shop is run by Country & Eastern who have 40 years’ experience in importing and retailing fine examples of the traditional arts and crafts of this vibrant region. The museum is managed by the South Asian Decorative Arts and Crafts Collection Trust, a registered charity.
