Timber Hill

Castle and Marketplace

One of the oldest recorded city streets, Timberhill pre dates Elm Hill in Norwich and is packed full of history!

In the Middle Ages goods were sold down Timberhill- or, as it was called then, ‘Swinemarket Hill’ and later ‘Timbermarket Hill’. The street then became known as ‘Timberhill’ as it is today.

Timberhill, and the surrounding area, was badly damaged in the Norwich Blitz of 1942,  and this damaged many of the buildings, with some completely ruined.

Today the area boasts a range of boutiques, quirky shops and beauty salons as well as well-loved pub The Murderers (also known as The Gardeners) and one of only two surviving coaching inns in Norwich, The Bell Hotel, plus many other historical buildings.
